Public Square - November 2010
by Edmond Temple, Mayor of Jemez Springs
"It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you knew for sure that just ain’t so." -Mark Twain
The Village Council honored the seven non-profits -- Jemez Valley Community Association, Animal Amigos, Jemez Sustainable Solutions, The Educational Foundation, Friends of the Library, Helping Hands, and the JS Presbyterian Church Food pantry-- who provided the manpower to help Cindy Childers put on the successful Village Concert in September. Thank you.
Jemez Springs Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Robert Cart, reported to the Council on a number of issues including the recently concluded State Fire Marshall inspection and their progress in resolving the Medical Director issue affecting the Department’s ability to offer EMS. The larger issue of a shrinking roster coupled with a lack of new volunteers that is challenging the Department’s abilities to serve the community was discussed. Alternatives to Jemez Springs having its own Volunteer Fire Department were also discussed.
Mayor Temple reported to the Council on a number of issues. The Village has retained Wilson & Company to undertake a drainage study focusing on improving drainage along the existing walkway. New Mexico DOT’s timeline for the Bridges Replacement Project is slipping. The Town Hall meetings regarding guidelines for music at the Civic Center went well and the Mayor has received 20 completed music surveys. The Mayor will submit his proposed guidelines to the Council at the December Council meeting. The Mayor updated the Council on the current Road Co-op projects and requested Council’s input in preparing next year’s project list. The Mayor is meeting with P&Z Commissioners to discuss his thoughts regarding updating the current P&Z codes. The Village will be adding a part-time police officer to the department shortly.
The next monthly Council meeting will be December 8th. The public is welcome.
