Visitor Guide

The Jemez area abounds with things to do and see. For the adventurous there are great hiking and mountain bike trails, places to camp and fish, and in the winter, cross-country skiing is quite popular. The Santa Fe National Forest and Valles Caldera websites are a great place to get more information.

Those looking for rest and relaxation can stay overnight and enjoy a soak and massage at the Jemez Springs Bath House. Take care of your hunger with a great meal at one of the local restaurants. If you still have some energy left you can do some leisurely shopping.

At special times of the year there are Native American festivals and dances at the nearby pueblos to which the public is invited. Not all celebrations are open to the public. If you're not sure please call ahead.

Also a popular point of interest is the Jemez State Monument, located in the Village of Jemez Springs. Visitors are welcome to tour the history and the beauty of this historical site. The ruins are among the most impressive in the Southwest. An interpretive trail winds through the 7 acre site. The visitor center contains exhibits interpreting historic events from the perspective of the Jemez people.

The Jemez Mountain Trail

Just northwest of Albuquerque, in Sandoval County at the village of San Ysidro (Junction of NM 550 and 4) begins one of New Mexico's most spectacular scenic drives, the Jemez Mountain Trail, declared a National Scenic Byway in recognition of its fantastic natural and cultural resources.

Traveling this trail is a journey through time. A leisurely day trip takes you past amazing geological formations, ancient Indian ruins, the Jemez Pueblo and the remainders of the area's logging, mining and ranching heritage. Much of the region is now a National Recreation Area, and there are many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping and cross country skiing. The Jemez Mountains are famous for their natural hot springs.
